The World Bank: Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics 2023: Growth and Resilience

We are delighted to announce the 2023 Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE) on "Growth and Resilience", to be held on June 5-6, 2023 in Washington, DC in-person and online.

The ABCDE is organized by the World Bank's Development Economics (DEC) Vice Presidency, and it is one of the world's best-known conferences for the presentation and discussion of new knowledge on social and economic development. The conference aims to promote the exchange of cutting-edge knowledge among researchers, policymakers, and development practitioners.

TOPICS: We invite submissions of innovative full research papers that study growth and resilience of countries, societies, institutions, businesses, households, and individuals. We welcome submissions that span a variety of topics related to growth and resilience, including but not limited to:
- Interplay between growth and resilience in the short-, medium-, and long-term
- Linkages between growth and resilience at the micro level (individuals, households, businesses) and the macro level (countries, societies, institutions)
- Policies, societal or institutional designs, and interventions to raise living standards, and promote inclusive growth and resilience
- Role of innovation, technology, knowledge management, education, labor market policies, trade networks, value chains, households’ risk management/risk coping strategies for raising living standards, and promoting growth and resilience
- Pace, drivers, and impacts of structural transformation that shape growth and resilience in low- and middle-income country contexts
- Lessons learned about resilience, welfare impacts, and recovery, from crises such as COVID-19 pandemic, civil unrest, war, or forced migration
- Innovations in data collection and methods for crisis monitoring, the measurement and study of living standards, and resilience

SUBMISSIONS/FURTHER INFORMATION: Paper submissions are due on March 3rd, 2023. Authors of selected papers will be informed by April 14, 2023.

We are delighted to announce that our keynote speakers are Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln (Goethe University Frankfurt) and Douglas Gollin (Oxford University). The conference will include a mix of full paper presentations as well as “lightning talks”. All presentations will take place in plenary sessions. We will cover travel and accommodation expenses for presenters and discussants.
